Where it comes from

Our story of Joselito

José Gómez Ortega, known as Joselito, was the most technically accomplished bullfighter of his generation and had been performing since childhood. He was gored to death in a small ring in a provincial town at twenty-five, in front of a crowd that had been heckling him. The country reacted as it has reacted to very few deaths: the funeral filled Seville, a sculptor was commissioned for the tomb, and a great deal of Spanish writing about the period treats his death as the end of something. As for the name, Spanish can add one affectionate ending and then another, so a José becomes a Joselito and can become a Joselillo after that, with each step a shade warmer.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name is built on José, from the Hebrew name behind Joseph, whose sense is documented. The affectionate endings carry no meaning of their own beyond familiarity.

Fashion outlook

Joselito sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jose and Lito are both available as short forms and both work on their own.
  • It is thoroughly warm in Spanish, which is exactly what the endings are for.
  • Four open syllables make it unmistakable when spoken.
What to consider
  • The endings are affectionate, which suits a child and can wear on an adult.
  • English readers will say the j as an English j, which is the main correction.
  • Four syllables is a lot for an American form and it will be shortened by other people first.
