Spanish writes one sound with two letters and Jorje picks the unambiguous one. The g before an e and the letter j make exactly the same throat sound in Spanish; the standard spelling of this name uses a g for the first and a j would do as well, so a family writing both as j is regularising rather than inventing.

Where it comes from

The story of Jorje

The cross that carries the saint's name was a crusader badge before it was a flag. English soldiers in the Levant adopted a red cross on white as a field sign, the saint was already popular in the eastern churches, and the two came home together; a king later made him the patron of the realm and the order of chivalry he founded, and the cross went onto banners, ships and eventually a flag. Genoa was using the same cross earlier and English ships are said to have paid for the right to fly it in the Mediterranean for protection. A field marking for telling your own side apart in a fight is now a national flag, and the saint under it was probably a soldier executed in Palestine about whom nothing else is known.

Meaning

Farmer

Greek georgos, an earth-worker, joining the words for earth and for work. It is one of the plainest meanings in the whole European name stock and belongs to a saint whose story turned out to be almost entirely legendary. The Spanish form kept the meaning and changed every consonant on the way.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. Both consonants are made at the back of the mouth, close to the ch in Scottish loch; English speakers substitute an h, which Spanish speakers accept without comment.

Fashion outlook

Jorje sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at sight by any Spanish or Portuguese speaker.
  • The meaning is transparent and can be given to a child in one word.
  • The spelling removes an ambiguity that the standard form leaves in place.
What to consider
  • Jorge is the standard spelling everywhere and this one will be corrected in Spanish as well as English.
  • English speakers reading it cold produce an English j and a quite different name.
  • The name has no accepted spelling in English, so it will always need giving.
