The river runs from the slopes below Mount Hermon to the Dead Sea, and it does nothing but descend — ending more than four hundred meters below sea level, in water so saline that nothing lives in it and a swimmer cannot sink. That is the lowest exposed land on the planet. The name is therefore not a metaphor and not a blessing but a piece of observation, made by people who could see where the water went. It became a personal name in Europe through pilgrims, who brought water home for baptisms, and the name has been given to children on both sides of the Atlantic ever since without most of them knowing it describes a gradient.
