Where it comes from

Our story of Jonita

In the story, a man refuses an errand, takes ship in the opposite direction, and the vessel runs into weather so bad that the crew cast lots to find out whose fault it is. He tells them to throw him overboard and they do, reluctantly, and the storm stops. Sailors took the point. A jonah, in English from the eighteenth century onward, is a person whose presence aboard brings disaster, and the word is still current in fishing fleets and navies, usually said half in joke and entirely in earnest. Very few names make the leap into the dictionary as common nouns, and fewer still keep the whole plot of their story attached. Jonita has no documented link to it. But the syllable at the front has been to sea.

Jonita sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1952, with 30 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jonita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Nita and Joni are both ready as short forms and both stand alone.
  • Three open syllables with a clear middle stress carry well and are easy to hear.
  • It works in English and Spanish without adjustment, which matters in many households.
What to consider
  • It will be written Juanita, Jonetta and Jonita by people working from sound alone.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
  • It belongs audibly to one stretch of American naming, which places it in time for some listeners.
