Joniel
Masculine
Joniel is built the way a great many Puerto Rican and Dominican names are built: a familiar first syllable joined to -iel, the Hebrew ending that means God and closes Gabriel, Daniel and Ariel. The ending is genuinely ancient; the name is genuinely new.

Our story of Joniel
Across the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, families have spent the last few decades making new names out of old parts, and the -iel ending has been the busiest of them: Yariel, Jariel, Aniel, Adiel, Joniel. The reason is not hard to hear. It ends high and bright, it rhymes with names the whole neighborhood already loves, and it carries the syllable that means God at the end of every one. Joniel puts the opening of Jonathan or of Juan in front of it. What comes out is a name that sounds as though it had been in the Bible all along, made by parents who knew exactly which piece they were borrowing.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The compound is not documented. Its ending is: el is the Hebrew word for God, and it closes a long list of real names, Gabriel and Daniel and Yariel and Ariel among them. The Jon- that opens it looks like John, itself from Hebrew Yochanan, but no source treats Joniel as a form of any older name.
Pronouncing Joniel
hoh-nee-EL
In Spanish the J is an h and the stress falls at the end, hoh-nee-EL. English speakers say JOH-nee-el instead, and most families answer to both.

The Jerett test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joniel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jerett climbed just as high around 1983, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jerett's path sketches the road Joniel is walking now.
Joniel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The -iel ending places it immediately among names its community knows well.
- It offers several short forms, Jon and Joni, of different registers.
- It is uncommon enough to be personal while sounding entirely at home.
- The J is read two different ways depending on the language, which means two versions of the name.
- Yoniel, Jonyel and Joniell all appear, so the spelling will be asked for.
- There is no documented history behind the whole name, only behind its ending.
