Where it comes from

The story of Jonell

Middle English wrote the name Jon and said it that way; the h is a later addition by scribes copying the Latin Johannes, and it has been silent since the day it went in. A name built on the h-less spelling is therefore using the older English form, whether or not the family knew it. What was fitted to it is French — the -elle ending that English borrowed as a decoration in the twentieth century and applied to almost anything — so the name has a medieval English base and a modern French ending. The record gives it almost entirely to girls, as the -elle ending would suggest.

Fashion outlook

Jonell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are familiar, so the name is read correctly at sight.
  • It carries two short forms that are both standing names.
  • The stress at the back gives it a lift most two-syllable names do not have.
What to consider
  • Jonelle, Janelle and Jonell are all in the record and will be confused constantly.
  • The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the first half of the twentieth century.
