The story of Jone
Almost everything about Joan of Arc comes from court documents, which is very rare for a medieval person and unheard of for a peasant. The trial that condemned her was recorded in detail, in Latin with the French of the actual exchanges preserved in places, and she answers interrogators for weeks — often evasively, sometimes with a sharpness that the notaries clearly enjoyed writing down. Twenty-five years after her death her mother petitioned for the case to be reopened, and a second trial heard well over a hundred witnesses who had known her: neighbors from the village, soldiers she had served with, her childhood friends. That record survives too. The second court annulled the first verdict and declared the trial fraudulent. Between the two proceedings, a teenager from a village is documented in more depth than most kings of the period.

probably the English feminine of John
Jone was a standard English spelling of Joan into the seventeenth century, which makes that the likeliest reading. But the same four letters could be a clipping of Jonetta or a phonetic version of something else, and the record holds the spelling for children of both sexes, which the Joan reading does not explain.

Fashion outlook
Jone sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four letters fit any field on any form.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- The older spelling has genuine historical depth behind it.
- Joan, June and Jane will all be written for it.
- The syllable count is unstable, so the name is said two ways.
- It is one letter from a very common men's name, which causes confusion on paper.
