Where it comes from

Our story of Jolette

The French ending means small, and English borrowed it wholesale. A roulette is a little wheel. A novelette is a small novel. A cigarette is a small cigar, a statuette a small statue, a kitchenette a small kitchen. An omelette is trickier, having been reshaped from a word about a thin plate, but it carries the same ending. English then started making its own: leatherette, towelette, luncheonette, and the launderette. What began as a French grammatical device is now an English suffix meaning either small or an imitation of, which is why calling something a -ette has a faintly patronizing edge that the French original never had.

The front could be Jo from any of several longer names, and the ending is a borrowed diminutive used freely in American naming. Nothing explains this particular pairing.

Fashion outlook

Jolette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jo and Lettie are both available as short forms and both are established.
  • The stress is unmistakable, so it is rarely mispronounced on a first reading.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
What to consider
  • The ending carries a faint sense of smallness in English, which is worth knowing in advance.
  • Joletta and Jolet are both in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
