Where it comes from

Our story of Johnthan

Yehonatan and Yohanan are two separate Hebrew names, both built on a short form of the divine name and both extremely common in the Bible. The first joins it to a verb about giving; the second to a word about favor or grace. They passed through Greek and Latin into European languages by different routes and came out looking similar in English only, where the first three letters happen to line up. Once they did, the confusion was inevitable: English speakers have been treating Jonathan as a long form of John for centuries, and it is not one. This spelling makes the assumption visible by writing it out. It is not an error so much as a very old misunderstanding, finally committed to paper.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Jonathan means that the Lord has given. John means that the Lord is gracious. They share a second element and nothing else, and this spelling fuses them in a way neither language does. Which of the two a family had in mind is not recorded.

Fashion outlook

Johnthan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody is ever stuck for how to say it.
  • Jon is available as a short form from the first day and needs no explaining.
  • The name behind it is ancient and well documented in a very old written tradition.
What to consider
  • Jonathan is the standard spelling by an enormous margin and this one will be corrected to it constantly.
  • The extra h cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every single time.
  • No reason for the spelling is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks why.
