Where it comes from

The story of Johnita

English made feminines of John long ago: Joan in the Middle Ages, then Jane, then Jean from Scotland. Each was worn smooth enough that most people no longer hear John inside it. American families in the twentieth century wanted the John to show, and so they built Johnnie for girls, Johnetta and Johnita. One of the best-known women to carry that visible John was Johnnie Tillmon, a laundry worker and mother in Los Angeles who organized women on welfare and argued in print that welfare was a women's issue.

Fashion outlook

Johnita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Its meaning is clear and its root is one of the best-known names in the world.
  • Nita is a ready, gentle short form.
  • It is rare, so she will seldom share it.
What to consider
  • Some will read it as JOHN-ih-tuh, and it will need saying once.
  • People may assume a Spanish background because of the ending.
