Johney is a pet form written as a legal name, and the name behind it was so universal in England that it stopped naming individuals. When a name is carried by a fifth of the men in a country, the language starts using it as a placeholder: for an unidentified man, for a sailor, for a countryman, for anybody at all whose actual name is not the point.

How old is the name Johney?

Johney first appears in US birth records in 1888 — 137 years ago. The typical Johney alive today was born around 1937, making them about 88 years old. About 600 people named Johney are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Johney

A name that everybody has becomes a word. English produced a legal placeholder for an unnamed man, a term for an ordinary sailor, a phrase for someone who can turn a hand to anything, a word for a small boat and several less polite items, all built on the same name and all a consequence of its sheer frequency. French did the same with its version at the same period, and the two languages arrived independently at using their commonest man's name as a synonym for anybody. The pet form here belongs to the American nineteenth-century habit of putting the household name on the certificate, and it appears for daughters as well as sons, which the -ey ending did not prevent at the time and would now.

Meaning

God is gracious

A Hebrew sentence-name meaning that God has shown favor, arriving in English through Greek and Latin. The reading is settled. The -ey ending is an affectionate English marker with no sense of its own, and the h in the middle was reinserted by scholars who knew the Hebrew and was never actually pronounced in English.

How the name formed

  1. A Hebrew sentence-name about divine favor
  2. The commonest man's name in medieval England
  3. Becoming a placeholder word in the language
  4. Johney on American certificates for both sexes

Related forms: Giovanni · Juan · Ivan

Two syllables, stress on the first. The h in the middle is silent and always has been in English; it was put back into the spelling by Renaissance scholars who knew the Hebrew and wanted the letter visible.

Johney sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 45 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Johney sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is among the most familiar in the language and needs no explanation.
  • It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
  • John is available inside it as the most established man's name in English.
What to consider
  • Johnny and Johnnie are both commoner and this spelling will be converted into one.
  • It reads as a pet form, and people will ask for the full version.
  • It is very firmly of the turn of the twentieth century.
