Where it comes from

The story of Johnette

The h was put back by people who thought it belonged. Middle English wrote the name Jon, with no h anywhere, because that is what French had handed over and what everybody said. Then scholars who knew the Latin form restored the letter in writing, as they did to a great many words in the same period, and it stuck on the page while never appearing in anyone's mouth. So the letter this name preserves is itself a restoration — an antiquarian correction to a spelling that had been perfectly settled — and the feminines that dropped it were, in a sense, going back to what English had actually been doing.

Meaning

God is gracious

The Hebrew name behind it is a complete statement rather than a description, and the sense passes through unchanged. The French ending adds smallness and affection and nothing else.

Pronouncing Johnette

jon-ETT

Two syllables with the weight at the back, as the French ending requires. The h is entirely silent, exactly as it is in the man's name.

Johnette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1949, with 58 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Johnette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It keeps the base name visible in a way its relatives do not.
  • The stress at the back gives it a decisive finish.
  • Jo works as a short form and needs no explaining.
What to consider
  • Jonette and Johnetta both appear and the spelling gets queried.
  • The diminutive ending makes it a small version of a very large name.
  • It is closely tied to the middle decades of the last century.
