Where it comes from

The story of Johncarlos

Spanish has long paired Juan with a second name, and Juan Carlos became one of the best known of those pairs through Juan Carlos de Borbón, who became king in 1975. On the night of 23 February 1981, with armed Civil Guards holding the Spanish parliament, he went on television in uniform and ordered the army to stand by the constitution, and the coup collapsed the next day. Johncarlos keeps the second name in Spanish and gives the first in English, a half-translation that turns the pair into a single word.

Meaning

God is gracious, and free man

John goes back to Hebrew Yohanan, Yahweh has been gracious; Carlos is the Spanish Charles, from a Germanic word for a free man. The compound carries both meanings side by side.

Fashion outlook

Johncarlos sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are among the best-known names in their languages, so only the join needs explaining.
  • Carries the meanings of John and Charles together.
  • Works in English and Spanish, with Carlos or John available on its own.
What to consider
  • The best-known Juan Carlos, the former Spanish king, abdicated in 2014 and later left Spain amid inquiries into his finances, so his name carries that as well as 1981.
  • Written as one word, it will be split, hyphenated or corrected to Juan Carlos on forms; deciding early how the documents write it keeps them consistent.
