Johnathen is a name being pulled toward a more famous one. The h in the middle does not belong to it; it has been dragged across from a shorter and much commoner name that this one is not related to, and the ending has drifted too. Both changes are the same process: a familiar spelling exerting a gravitational pull on an unfamiliar one.

Where it comes from

The story of Johnathen

The scene the name is best known for is a signal arranged between two friends. One of them needed to know whether the king intended to kill him, and could not be present to find out; so they agreed that the other would shoot arrows into a field and send a boy to fetch them, and that what he shouted to the boy would carry the message. If the arrows were on this side, all was well; if beyond, the friend was to run. He shot beyond, and told the boy to hurry, and the friend understood and ran, and the two of them met once more and never again. It is a piece of narrative craft as much as a story: the information passes without a word being addressed to the man it is for.

Meaning

the Lord has given

Two Hebrew elements, a divine name and a verb about giving, and the reading is settled. The sentence is complete as it stands: it is a statement rather than a description, which is how a great many Hebrew names work. Neither the added h nor the respelled ending affects the meaning; they affect only what the name is mistaken for.

How the name formed

  1. A Hebrew sentence meaning the Lord has given
  2. Carried into English by the Reformation
  3. The spelling pulled toward a commoner name
  4. Johnathen with both changes made

Johnathen sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 54 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Johnathen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a complete sentence and easy to explain to a child.
  • Jon and Nate are two of the most usable short forms going.
  • The sound is universally familiar and needs no coaching.
What to consider
  • Jonathan is the standard spelling and this will be corrected into it constantly.
  • The h invites the assumption that this is a form of John, which it is not.
  • Four spellings are in circulation and yours will be written as another.
