Johnatan moves a letter. The standard spelling of this name carries an h in the last syllable, marking a Hebrew consonant; this version takes it out of there and puts it at the front, where it produces the English name John instead. The result is a name that looks like a compound and is not one.

Where it comes from

The story of Johnatan

The most famous English bearer of the name published a pamphlet in seventeen twenty-nine proposing that the children of the Irish poor be fattened and sold as food to gentlemen of quality, with recipes, costings and a calculation of how many could be reserved for breeding. It is one of the most controlled pieces of sustained irony in the language and its target is precise: not the poor, but the economic writing of the period, which discussed Irish poverty entirely in terms of numbers and yields. Swift imitates that voice exactly. A number of early readers missed it — some were outraged, some corresponded with the author about the practicalities — and the confusion has repeated in every century since, which is arguably the pamphlet's most durable achievement.

Meaning

the Lord has given

A Hebrew sentence-name joining a short form of the divine name to a verb meaning to give. It is not the same name as John, which uses a different verb, and it is not a compound of John and Nathan, though this spelling makes it look like one.

Fashion outlook

Johnatan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jon and Nate both detach and sound completely different from each other.
  • The meaning is a full sentence and is documented all the way back.
  • Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable and familiar rhythm.
What to consider
  • Jonathan is the standard spelling and this will be corrected for a lifetime.
  • The spelling makes the name look like John and Nathan joined, which it is not.
  • The moved letter is silent as a change, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
