Where it comes from

Our story of Johnae

The name John is attached to more things in the ordinary world than almost any other, and one of them grows in field margins across the northern hemisphere. Saint John's wort takes its name from the day it flowers on: the feast of John the Baptist falls at midsummer, and the plant comes into bloom around it, which is when it was traditionally gathered. Wort is simply the old English word for a plant, the same one buried in figwort and liverwort and in the wort that brewers make beer from. Held up to the light the leaves look pricked full of holes, which is where its botanical name comes from; the holes are oil glands. It has been used as a medicine for a very long time, and the modern research on it is a rare case of an old folk remedy surviving a proper trial.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The first element is John, which has a documented Hebrew meaning. The ending does not: it is a free American suffix used across many names of this period and carries nothing of its own. What the family meant by joining them is not recorded.

Johnae sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 47 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Johnae sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The father's name is visible in it, which is the point and is not always true of names built this way.
  • Jo is available immediately and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • Back stress makes a short name carry.
What to consider
  • Johnay, Johnnae and Jonae are all recorded and the spelling will need repeating.
  • The ending places the name firmly in the decades it was made in.
  • Only half the name has a meaning, and saying so is the honest answer.
