The letter that has gone missing here was replaced by one that looks like it, not one that sounds like it. Swapping an n for an h is a slip of the hand: in cursive the two are formed almost identically, and a name written quickly and read back by somebody else produces exactly this. It is a copying error, not a hearing one.

Where it comes from

The story of Johathan

For about fifty years the personification of the United States was called Brother Jonathan. He appeared in cartoons and satire from the Revolution onward as a lanky New Englander in a striped coat and top hat, sharp, rural and not to be taken in — and he was the figure European caricaturists used when they wanted to draw America. Uncle Sam displaced him gradually through the nineteenth century and had taken over completely by the Civil War. The two overlapped for decades and were occasionally drawn in the same picture, as separate people.

Meaning

the Lord has given

Hebrew, and the elements are unambiguous: the divine name joined to a verb meaning to give. It is a different name from John, which uses a different verb, though the two are frequently treated as versions of one another.

Fashion outlook

Johathan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jon and Nathan both sit inside it as complete and independent names.
  • The name underneath is ancient and universally recognized.
  • The sound is settled even though the spelling is not.
What to consider
  • It will be read as a misspelling of a very common name, always.
  • Jonathan is overwhelmingly standard and this gets corrected for life.
  • It is closely tied to the decades of its use.
