Where it comes from
From Iohannes to Johann
The story of Johann
In Erfurt, town musicians were called Bachs long after no Bach was left in the post. The family produced organists, town pipers and court players in an unbroken line for something like seven generations, occupying the musical jobs of Thuringia so thoroughly that the surname became a trade term; one of them compiled a family genealogy listing them all, which is how the extent of it is known. They held annual family gatherings where, by the account in that genealogy, they sang improvised quodlibets — several popular tunes stacked on top of each other, for a joke. The best-known member of the family was one working musician among dozens, and was regarded in his lifetime chiefly as an organist.

Fashion outlook
Johann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a standing German name rather than an invented spelling.
- Hans comes off it as a ready-made short form.
- The meaning is documented and the descent is unbroken.
- The German and English readings differ in both the j and the stress.
- Johan, Johanne and Yohan will all be written for it.
- The record holds this spelling for daughters as well, though almost never.
