Joannie
Feminine · “God is gracious”
Joannie is a pet form built on a pet form. Johanna was shortened to Joan several centuries ago, Joan was softened to Joanie, and this spelling doubles the n on top of that, so the name is three steps from the Latin and four from the Hebrew. Each step was somebody's affectionate improvisation and each one stuck.

The story of Joannie
For four hundred years, a great many educated Europeans believed there had been a woman pope. The story appears in the thirteenth century, spreads through chronicles and sermons, acquires circumstantial detail as it goes, and is treated as straightforward history by writers who had no reason to want it to be true. It was only demolished properly in the seventeenth century, and by a Protestant scholar, which surprised people at the time. The legend attached itself to this name because the name was among the commonest women's names in Europe. That is generally how such stories work: they need an ordinary name to sound plausible, and the name they choose is whatever the audience hears most often. The name itself came out of the enormous medieval popularity of its masculine form, which for several centuries was the most-used man's name in Christendom.
Meaning
God is gracious
The Hebrew sentence-name behind the whole family means that God has shown favor, and the reading is settled. Everything after that is form rather than sense: the Latin feminine, the medieval English clipping, the affectionate ending and the doubled consonant all leave the meaning untouched. A name at this many removes still carries it, in the way a great-grandchild carries a surname.
How the name formed
- A Hebrew sentence-name about divine favor
- Johanna as the Latin feminine
- Joan across medieval England
- Joanie and Joannie as American softenings

JOH-nee
Two syllables, stress on the first, with the doubled n changing nothing audible. Some families say jo-AN-ee with three syllables, treating the spelling as Joan plus an ending, and the letters permit both.

Fashion outlook
Joannie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar and needs no explanation anywhere.
- Joan, Annie and Jo are three very different names all available from one certificate.
- It carries an unbroken European history without any of the formality of the longer forms.
- Joanie is the commoner spelling and this one will be converted into it regularly.
- The number of syllables is genuinely unsettled and worth establishing at an introduction.
- It reads as a pet form, and some people will keep looking for a longer version.
