The story of Joanne
The Hebrew Yohanan became Johannes in Greek and Latin, and its feminine Johanna entered French and English in several shapes at once: Joan, Jane, Joanna and Joanne. Joanne Woodward won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Three Faces of Eve (1957), playing a woman with three distinct personalities. Much later the singer Lady Gaga, whose own middle name is Joanne, titled her 2016 album Joanne after her father's sister, Joanne Germanotta, who died at nineteen, years before Gaga was born.
Meaning
God has been gracious (Hebrew, through John)
Joanne descends from Johanna, the Latin feminine of Johannes, John, from the Hebrew Yohanan, 'God has been gracious.' The -anne ending is the French shape; English kept the shorter Joan and the Latin Joanna beside it.

The Viola test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joanne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Viola climbed just as high around 1908, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Viola's path sketches the road Joanne is walking now.
Joanne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A standard spelling most people already know, with Jo as a ready short form.
- Part of the John family, among the most widely used name families in Europe.
- Familiar to everyone yet rarely given to children now, so it will seldom be shared in a classroom.
- It competes with Joann, JoAnn and Jo Anne, so it will need spelling out.
- It is best known among women of earlier generations, so it reads as a name of that era.
- A very small number of boys are recorded with it; for them it will be read as a girl's name.
