Where it comes from

Our story of Jessilyn

A jess is a short leather strap fastened round a hawk's leg so the falconer can hold her, and Othello uses the word in a speech about letting a woman go. Falconry was the aristocratic sport of medieval Europe for centuries and it left a great deal behind in ordinary English. To be fed up is what a hawk is when she has eaten and will not fly. A haggard was a wild-caught adult hawk, difficult to man, and the word came to mean a wild look in a face. To rouse is what a bird does when it shakes its feathers. Under her thumb describes how the jesses are held. Hoodwinked is what the hood does. Bated breath is a bird bating — beating its wings while tethered. Almost nobody using those phrases has seen a hawk.

The front is a familiar form that could come from Jessica, Jessie or Jesse, which have different origins. The ending is a free American element with no content. Nothing records the join, so the compound has no meaning of its own.

Fashion outlook

Jessilyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jessi detaches cleanly and is a complete name.
  • Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable English rhythm.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Jesselyn, Jessalyn and Jessylin are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The ending places the name in a particular stretch of American fashion.
  • Neither half carries a meaning here, so the origin question has a short answer.
