Where it comes from

The story of Jessicca

Shakespeare gave the name to Shylock's daughter, who runs away from her father's house, and from the play it slowly became an English and then an American name. Jessica Mitford, one of the famous Mitford sisters, moved to California and wrote The American Way of Death, an investigation of the funeral business so sharp and funny that it changed the laws on how funerals are sold. Jessicca doubles the c, which neither Shakespeare nor any later form did, and nothing records why.

a name first found in Shakespeare

Jessica first appears in The Merchant of Venice as the name of Shylock's daughter. It is usually traced to Iscah, a minor figure in Genesis, but Shakespeare left no note, so the link is argued.

Fashion outlook

Jessicca sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It sounds exactly like a familiar, well-loved name.
  • Jess and Jessie are ready short forms.
What to consider
  • Nearly everyone will write Jessica, and the second c will need spelling out.
  • The doubled c may be read as a typo on forms.
