Jessamyn is a flower name, but not the flower spelling most people know. Before English settled on jasmine it wrote the plant jessamine, and that older form is what stands behind this name — which is why it looks like Jessica and is not related to it at all.

The story of Jessamyn
The spelling is rare enough that one writer accounts for most of its visibility. Jessamyn West was a Californian novelist raised in a Quaker family in Indiana, and her best-known book is a set of linked stories about a Quaker household in southern Indiana during the Civil War — people whose religion forbade them to fight, living in a state where the fighting came close. Hollywood filmed it, and she worked on the production and afterwards published a book about what that was like, which is unusual: novelists rarely leave a record of the adaptation process from the inside. She wrote for another thirty years, including a memoir about nursing her sister through a terminal illness that was controversial when it appeared.
Meaning
jasmine, the flower
The plant name traveled from Persian yasamin through Arabic into medieval Latin and then into French, which handed English two spellings. Jessamine was the usual English form for centuries; jasmine won later. The name has no connection to Jessica, which comes from a different language entirely.

Fashion outlook
Jessamyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It carries a real flower meaning without being the flower spelling everyone already has.
- Jess works as a short form from the first day of school.
- The stress pattern is the ordinary English one, so first attempts land correctly.
- It will be heard as Jessica and written as Jasmine, both regularly.
- The y at the end is the part people get wrong, and it is the only thing separating this spelling from the plant.
- It is recorded for sons as well, and a boy carrying a flower name in America will be asked about it.
