Jeryl puts a y in the middle of a name, which English hardly ever does outside words it took from Greek. Myth, system, rhythm and physics all have it because Greek had a letter English did not; putting it in the middle of a modern name is a twentieth-century American habit with no such excuse.

Our story of Jeryl
The letter y arrived in English twice. Old English used it for a vowel that has since disappeared, and then Norman scribes brought it back for a different job, writing it at the end of words where an i would be lost among the other strokes. Greek borrowings brought a third use. What none of those left behind was a habit of using it in the middle of an ordinary English word — which is exactly the gap that twentieth-century American naming moved into. A y in the middle of a name is a decision about how the name looks on paper, and it is one of the very few decisions the writing system leaves open.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name belongs to a small set that appeared in English between the wars — Cheryl, Beryl, Meryl, Jeryl — of which only one has a demonstrable origin. It may be a feminine built on Jerry, it may be a rhyme on the others, and no reference work carries it. What can be said is that the y is doing a vowel's job in a position where English normally uses an i, and that the choice is visual rather than phonetic.

Fashion outlook
Jeryl sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, unusual and read correctly at sight once the stress is settled.
- It works for a child of either sex, and the record carries it on both sides.
- It belongs to a real period of English naming rather than to an invention.
- There is no meaning and no established origin to give her.
- The stress placement is genuinely unsettled.
- It will be heard as Cheryl, Meryl and Jerilyn by nearly everybody.
