Jersey is an island in the English Channel, nine miles off the coast of Normandy, and it has lent its name to a state, a breed of cattle and a shirt. As a first name it is very new, and it does what American place-names do well: it sounds like somewhere before it sounds like someone.

The story of Jersey
The Channel Islands took Norse names from the Vikings who settled the Normandy coast, and Jersey has kept its since. New Jersey was named for it in the seventeenth century by an English proprietor who had held the island through the Civil War, which is how a scrap of the Channel ended up on the American map. The cattle came from the island too, and so did the knitted cloth that became an athlete's shirt — one small place with an unusually long reach into English.
Meaningscholars disagree
an island name; the ending is Old Norse ey, 'island'
The ending is not in doubt: -ey is the Old Norse word for an island, the same one closing Guernsey, Alderney and Orkney, left along the Channel by Scandinavian settlers. The first element is argued over — a Norse personal name has been proposed, and an older Latin Caesarea was long assumed but is now generally doubted. What the whole word meant to whoever coined it is not recoverable.

The Rakesh test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jersey's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rakesh climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rakesh's path sketches the road Jersey is walking now.
Jersey sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Jersey is headed
Jersey should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Everyone can already spell it and say it — it is a word English speakers meet constantly.
- Used for boys and girls without a strong pull in either direction.
- A real place with a documented Norse name behind it rather than an invented sound.
- It is a state, a shirt and a breed of cow before it is a name, and those associations arrive before the child does.
- In sports-following circles the shirt reading will come first, and it will come up often.
- Place-names as first names date quickly, and this one is tied to a specific moment in American naming.
