Jerrie is the fifth spelling of one short form. Gerry, Geri, Gerri, Jerry and Jerrie all serve Gerald and Geraldine, and the pattern is consistent enough to read: the J and the -ie both mark the women's version, and the G and the -y both mark the men's. Nobody wrote that down and everybody followed it.

Where it comes from
From Gerald to Jerrie
The story of Jerrie
English has never had a rule assigning J or G to this sound, and it has never needed one, because the two letters are read identically before an e. What the language did instead was let the spellings drift apart by use: within a generation the J spellings were going to daughters and the G spellings to sons, without any authority saying so. The -ie and -y endings did the same work from the other end. Five spellings, one sound, and a consistent and entirely unofficial convention.
Meaningscholars disagree
spear-ruler
Gerald joins the Germanic ger, a spear, with wald, rule, and Geraldine was coined from the FitzGerald surname in a Tudor sonnet sequence. So the meaning arrives at two or three removes depending on which parent applies, and a short form serving both sides of the family inherits loosely. The elements themselves are not disputed; what is uncertain is how much of them survives the journey.

Fashion outlook
Jerrie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The J forecloses the Gary misreading that the G spellings invite.
- Geraldine is available as a formal long form with a documented literary origin.
- Two syllables, easy in any accent, and short enough for any surname.
- Five spellings compete and none is standard, so the name is dictated every time.
- It reads as a nickname on a document, and the long form has to be supplied.
- The name is closely tied to the middle of the last century.
