Where it comes from

The story of Jerrett

One Gerard did as much as any single person to move knowledge into medieval Europe. Gerard of Cremona went to Toledo in the twelfth century because he wanted to read a work of Ptolemy that existed only in Arabic, learned the language, and stayed for the rest of his life; by the time he died he had translated something like eighty books out of Arabic into Latin, including Euclid, Galen, Aristotle, al-Khwarizmi and the medical encyclopedia of Ibn Sina, which then taught European doctors for four hundred years. A good deal of what the West knows about Greek science came through Arabic and through him. The name he carried was Germanic, ordinary in his century, and is the one at the bottom of this spelling.

Meaningscholars disagree

Spear rule, or spear strength

Garrett descends from Gerald or Gerard, two Germanic names sharing a first element meaning a spear and differing in the second, which is either rule or hardness. English and Irish speakers merged them centuries ago and the surname carries both. Jeremiah is Hebrew, unrelated, and reached the same short forms by accident of sound.

Fashion outlook

Jerrett sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar and never needs to be repeated.
  • Jerry and Rett are two short forms belonging to different generations.
  • The name has a documented Germanic line running back a thousand years.
What to consider
  • Garrett and Jarrett are both commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
  • The J spelling suggests a link to Jeremiah that is not there.
  • Four spellings of this sound circulate together, so it will need spelling out for life.
