Our story of Jerre
German forces in the desert campaign carried a stamped-steel fuel container with three handles, a sealed cap and a recessed side that let it take knocks without splitting. British and American forces were using flimsy tins that leaked so badly that a significant share of fuel never reached the vehicles. They captured some of the German cans, copied the design exactly, and called it a jerrycan, from the slang word for a German soldier. The name has outlived the war, the slang and in most places the metal, and the shape is still recognizable in plastic on the back of every expedition vehicle. It is a rare case of a piece of equipment being named after the people it was stolen from, openly, by the people who stole it.

Fashion outlook
Jerre sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is entirely familiar, so it is never mispronounced by anyone who has heard it.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
- Five letters and two syllables: easy to write and easy to learn to spell.
- Jerry and Jeri are both commoner, and this spelling will be corrected to one of them regularly.
- It leans to boys, but a real share of children with this spelling are girls, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
- It reads as a short form to some people, so formal settings will keep asking what it stands for.
