The story of Jermy
Most biblical books come down in one shape. This one comes down in two. The Greek translation made in Egypt is roughly an eighth shorter than the Hebrew text used in synagogues and printed Bibles, and it does not merely trim: whole passages are absent, and the oracles about foreign nations sit in the middle of the book in one version and at the end in the other. For a long time the difference was put down to a careless translator. Then fragments turned up among the Dead Sea Scrolls in Hebrew that matched the shorter Greek arrangement, which meant the translator had been working faithfully from a different Hebrew book. Two editions of the same prophet were circulating side by side. Scholars now generally think the shorter one is the earlier, and that the longer grew by expansion, which makes this the clearest surviving case of a biblical book being edited in public.
