Jeremey adds an e that English usually deletes. Jeremy already ends in a y doing the work of a vowel; putting another one in front of it is the sort of thing that happens when a name is written from hearing rather than reading, and it has been happening to this one for decades.

Where it comes from

The story of Jeremey

The prophet behind the name had his book burned by a king. Jeremiah dictated his prophecies to a scribe called Baruch, who read them aloud in the temple; the scroll was brought to King Jehoiakim, who sat by a fire and cut off each column with a knife as it was read and threw it in, until the whole thing was gone. Jeremiah dictated it again from the beginning, with additions. It is one of the few passages in the Bible that describes how a biblical book was physically made, and it is the reason we know the prophet did not write his own scroll.

Meaning

the Lord raises up

From the Hebrew Yirmeyahu. The reading is agreed; what is less agreed is whether the verb means to exalt, to appoint or to loosen, and translators have chosen differently.

Fashion outlook

Jeremey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Said aloud it is entirely familiar and needs no explanation.
  • It carries three quite different short forms, one of them a full French name.
  • The prophet behind it has one of the most vividly documented biographies in the Hebrew Bible.
What to consider
  • Jeremy is the standard spelling and will be restored by every form and autocorrect.
  • The extra letter adds no sound, so the difference exists only in writing.
  • Jeremy, Jeremey and Jeramy are three spellings of one name and all will be tried.
