The final e is the problem and the point. English uses a final e to lengthen the vowel in front of it, which means a reader meeting this spelling cold will reasonably try juh-REEM, in two syllables. Almost nobody carrying the name says that. The spelling promises a pronunciation the name does not use.

Where it comes from

The story of Jereme

The prophet did one thing that is easy to miss and hard to forget. With a besieging army camped outside the walls and the city obviously about to fall, he bought a field. He paid for it in front of witnesses, weighed out the silver, had the deed drawn up in duplicate and told his secretary to put both copies in a clay jar so they would keep. The point was not that the land was a good investment; it was about to be occupied. The point was that houses and fields and vineyards would be bought in that country again. It is the single most hopeful act in a book that is otherwise almost entirely warnings, and he performed it at the worst possible moment on purpose.

Fashion outlook

Jereme sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name underneath has been in continuous English use for centuries.
  • The short forms are varied and none of them depends on this spelling.
  • It is far rarer than the standard form while sounding identical.
What to consider
  • The spelling suggests a pronunciation nobody uses, and that will need correcting for life.
  • Jeremy and Jeremie are both standard and this will be changed to one of them.
  • It is closely tied to the decade of its rise.
