Short forms became certificate names in America roughly a century before they did in England, and the nineteenth-century South is full of them — Jere, Jess, Gus, Lon, Lum. The pattern reflects a practical attitude to naming rather than a careless one: a family that intended to call a boy Jere saw no reason to write anything else. Finland reached the same four letters from Jeremias in the twentieth century, which means the name is simultaneously an American antique and a modern Nordic one.

A four-letter clipping carries that meaning only loosely, since what is kept is the front of the name and the divine element is in the part dropped. Finnish Jere is a short form of Jeremias and arrives at the same spelling by an independent route.
