Jerard
Masculine · “brave with a spear”
Jerard is Gerard with the spelling problem removed. English g goes soft before an e, sometimes, and the exceptions are learned one word at a time — get, give and gear are hard, gem and gentle are soft, and a name beginning that way is a coin toss. Writing it with a j settles the matter permanently.

The story of Jerard
The most consequential Gerard was a Flemish mapmaker who changed the shape of the world on paper. He worked out a way of drawing the globe so that a line of constant compass bearing appears as a straight line — which is exactly what a navigator needs and which distorts the size of everything far from the equator. He also Latinized his own surname, which meant merchant, into the Latin word for the same thing, and it is that Latin word the projection is named after. So the map that made Greenland look like Africa carries a translation of a Flemish family's trade.
Meaning
brave with a spear
The Germanic compound is made of a word for a spear and a word for hardy or brave, which is the standard shape for names of that stock. It came to England with the Normans and has been in continuous use since. The spelling with a j is an American simplification: the sound has been a soft g in English for eight hundred years and this version simply writes what everybody says.
