Jeramy
Masculine · “the Lord lifts up”
Jeramy is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 4,519 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
Jeremiah is a name about lifting up, which is an irony given what the man is remembered for. The Hebrew joins a verb about raising or loosening with the divine name, and the prophet who carried it spent his career delivering bad news to people who did not want it — which is why English has the word jeremiad for a long complaint.

The story of Jeramy
The Book of Jeremiah is long, angry and largely correct — the prophet warned that Jerusalem would fall and it did — and the word jeremiad, meaning a sustained lament, comes from the book of Lamentations traditionally attributed to him. English took the name as Jeremy in the Middle Ages, which is why the short form is older than the full biblical spelling in this language. Jeramy records the middle syllable as it is said, which is to say barely at all.

the Lord lifts up
Hebrew Yirmeyahu joins a verb root with a short form of the divine name, and the verb can be read as to raise or exalt, or as to loosen or hurl. The Lord exalts is the usual rendering and the alternative is seriously held. Jeremy is the medieval English form of Jeremiah, and it entered English use separately and earlier than the biblical spelling did. The a in this version is unstressed and inaudible.

Pronouncing Jeramy
JAIR-uh-mee
JAIR-uh-mee, three syllables, stress at the front, the middle reduced to almost nothing. Jeremy and Jeramy are said identically; the middle vowel is the one English does not articulate, which is why the spelling drifts there.

Fashion outlook
Jeramy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The Hebrew behind it is documented and the prophet is one of the more compelling figures in the text.
- Jem and Remy are both usable short forms and they sound quite different.
- The name has been in English use since the Middle Ages, longer than the biblical spelling.
- Jeremy is the standard spelling and this will be corrected toward it constantly.
- Because the difference is inaudible, defending the a is a purely visual argument.
- It is closely tied to one American generation and dates a person fairly precisely.
