Jennine
Feminine · “God is gracious”
Jennine writes an English front onto a French ending and the two halves disagree. Jenny is thoroughly English and comes from Jane; the -ine is French and belongs on Jeanne. Put them together and you get a name that reads as French to English speakers and as nothing at all to French ones.

The story of Jennine
Jean and Jeanne were the commonest man's and woman's names in France for the better part of five hundred years, common enough that parish registers can be tedious to read and that the language had to build diminutives simply to tell people apart: Jeannot, Jeannette, Jeanine, Jeannine, Jeanneton. That is the pressure that produces suffixes. English had the same problem with John and solved it with surnames instead; French solved it by making the given name longer and more specific. The American form here takes the French solution and applies it to the English spelling of the name, which is why it looks slightly wrong to anybody who knows either language well and perfectly natural to everybody else.
Meaning
God is gracious
Every name in this family goes back to the same Hebrew sentence by way of John, through French Jean and Jeanne. The diminutive ending means small or dear and adds nothing else. So the name is a request about God, passed through Latin and French, softened twice, and respelled in America, and the sentence is still in there under all of it.

Fashion outlook
Jennine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is entirely familiar in English, French, Dutch and German alike.
- Jen and Nina are two short forms with nothing in common at all.
- Final stress gives the name a clean finish and makes it easy to call.
- Janine, Jeanine and Jeannine are all commoner, so spelling it out is permanent.
- The English front and French back do not match, which a bilingual reader will notice.
- It is firmly dated to the middle of the last century in American use.
