Where it comes from

The story of Jenney

The spelling Jenney is also an English surname, and its best-known bearer is William Le Baron Jenney. Trained as an engineer and seasoned in the Union army, he designed Chicago's Home Insurance Building, completed in 1885, which carried its weight on a skeleton of iron and steel rather than on thick masonry walls, and the young Louis Sullivan passed through his office on the way to his own career. As a girl's name, Jenney is Jenny with an added e, and the record adds no story beyond that.

God is gracious (through Jane), or fair (through Jennifer)

Jenny began in medieval English as a pet form of Janet and Jane, from John, Hebrew for God is gracious. In the twentieth century it also became the short form of Jennifer, whose Welsh root begins with gwen, fair. Jenney can lean on either.

Fashion outlook

Jenney sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sounds exactly like Jenny, a name everyone knows.
  • Shares its spelling with an American engineer remembered in the history of the skyscraper.
  • Jen is a ready short form.
What to consider
  • It will be corrected to Jenny almost every time it is written, so the extra e will need mentioning.
  • The spelling reads as a surname to some people; that is simply where the spelling also lives, and it does no harm.
