Where it comes from

The story of Jennette

The confusion between this name and Jennifer is entirely modern, and it runs the wrong way round. Jennette and Jeanette were in ordinary use in the nineteenth century, when Jennifer was a Cornish name that had not yet left Cornwall; Jenny was their short form, not Jennifer's. When Jennifer arrived in America in the twentieth century and became enormous, it took the short form with it, and everybody now assumes Jenny belongs to it. The e-spelling of this name is the older French one; the double-n spelling records the English pronunciation of the short form instead, and it appears in the American record from the very first year of the count.

Meaning

The name is a diminutive of Jean, the French form of Jane, and carries John's meaning through unchanged. The ending is French and marks a smaller or dearer version.

Jennette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1981, with 80 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jennette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at sight and needs no explanation.
  • Jenny and Nettie are ready short forms with completely different characters.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept.
What to consider
  • Jeanette is the commoner spelling and will be written instead.
  • It will be assumed to be a variant of Jennifer, which it is not.
  • It reads as a name of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
