Jennafer is a written variant of a name that was, for a decade and a half, the one American parents chose more than any other. What the spelling changes is the middle vowel — the weakest sound in the name and the one nobody actually pronounces — which is where nearly all respellings of nearly all names end up doing their work.

The story of Jennafer
James Hargreaves built the machine in a Lancashire village in the 1760s and did not patent it for six years, by which time other people were building copies and a mob had broken into his house and destroyed the ones he had. The story that he named it after his wife or his daughter is a Victorian addition, told and retold until it entered schoolbooks, and there is no contemporary evidence for it at all; he had no daughter of that name. The dull explanation is almost certainly right: jenny was a northern pronunciation of engine, and the machine was a spinning engine.
Meaning
from a Cornish form of Guinevere
The name reached general English use through Cornwall in the last century and had been almost unknown outside it before that. The short form has had a life of its own for far longer: a jenny has meant a female donkey and a female wren for centuries, and the spinning machine that started the industrial revolution in cotton is called a jenny. Whether that machine was named after a woman is genuinely disputed — the likelier explanation is that it comes from the word engine, which northern English pronounced in a way that made the two indistinguishable.

Fashion outlook
Jennafer sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

- The name is closely dated to a couple of decades and will place her generation instantly.
- Nothing in the record explains why this particular vowel was chosen.
