Jenette
Feminine · “God is gracious”
The a that marks this name as French has been removed. Jeanette carries it because the front is Jeanne, the French Joan; take it out and the front becomes Jen, which is English, and the name stops pointing across the Channel and starts pointing at a nickname.

The story of Jenette
The most famous woman ever to carry the French form was called it at home and something else at her trial. In her village she was Jeannette — the ordinary local diminutive, used by her family and neighbors — and she said so under questioning, adding that after she left home she was called by the fuller form instead. She signed herself Jehanne on the three surviving letters that carry her signature, in a hand that was clearly being taught to her. The name everyone now uses for her is an English rendering of a form she seems never to have used about herself.

Fashion outlook
Jenette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Jen sits inside it as a short form that is entirely familiar.
- The stress at the back gives it a decisive finish.
- It is shorter than the French form without losing anything audible.
- Jeanette and Jeannette are both standard and this gets corrected.
- The dropped letter removes the visible link to the French original.
- It is closely tied to the decades of its American use.
