The Roman father is said to have acknowledged a newborn as his own by setting the child on his knee, and the word for what was so acknowledged — genuinus — would then mean legitimate, and hence real. Dictionaries hedge this, because genuinus may equally come from gignere, to beget, which would give the same sense by a duller route, and the knee story may be a later explanation invented to fit. What is certain is that the two Latin words look alike and that ancient writers themselves connected them. Both roads end at the same place: something genuine is something a family admitted to.
