Where it comes from

Our story of Jenean

A jennet, in English from the fifteenth century onward, was a small Spanish riding horse, prized for being gentle and surefooted, and the word is all over Shakespeare's period. It came from the Spanish jinete, a light horseman, and that word came from the Zenata, a Berber people of North Africa whose cavalry rode in a style the Spanish adopted and named after them. So an English word for a docile horse is carrying the name of a North African people, by way of Spanish, because of a method of riding. The horses are gone and the word with them, except in dictionaries. Jenean has no documented connection to any of it, but three syllables built in America in the last century can still find themselves standing next to something very old.

Jeanine and Janine are the usual suggestions and the sound supports them, but nothing in the record documents the connection. Names built this way in the middle of the last century frequently had no single parent.

Fashion outlook

Jenean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody is at a loss for how to say it.
  • Jen is available as a short form from the first day and needs no explaining.
  • It is rare on paper while being ordinary in the ear, which is a comfortable combination.
What to consider
  • Janine and Jeanine are both commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • The ending looks like the English word gene followed by an, which some readers notice out loud.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
