Origin, sound and short forms
Our story of Jemel
English once had a word that looks like this name and has almost vanished from ordinary use: a gimmal, also written gemel, from the Latin gemellus, a twin. A gimmal ring was made of two or three hoops that interlocked into one band and could be pulled apart again, and the point of it was that two people could each wear a piece of the same ring during an engagement and put it back together at the wedding. Heralds used the same word for paired bars on a shield, drawn as twins. The word went out with the fashion, but the objects survive in museum cases, and the idea behind them — a single thing designed to come apart and be rejoined — is a good deal older than the ring.

This spelling cannot be assigned. Jamal, Jamil and Jamel are all in the record alongside it, and the Arabic names behind those have documented meanings, but nothing shows that this spelling descends from any particular one rather than being built from the sound.
Pronouncing Jemel
juh-MEL
Two syllables with the stress on the second. The first vowel is reduced almost to nothing in quick speech, which is why the spelling of that syllable varies so freely across the family.

Fashion outlook
Jemel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Back stress gives it a definite shape that a short name can lack.
- Jem and Mel both work as short forms and sound unrelated to each other.
- Six letters and no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
- Jamal and Jamel are both far commoner and will be written instead of this.
- The unstressed first vowel means the spelling has to be given every time.
- No meaning can honestly be claimed for this particular spelling.
