Where it comes from

The story of Jeffrie

The name's most notorious bearer left a phrase behind him. George Jeffreys, a brilliant and savage judge, was sent west after a failed rebellion to try the men who had joined it, and the sessions he held became known as the Bloody Assizes: hundreds condemned, hundreds more transported, all of it done at speed. When his king fled three years later, Jeffreys tried to escape the country disguised as a sailor, was recognized in a tavern, and died in the Tower. The spelling side of the name is calmer. Geoffrey with a G is the French form the Normans brought; Jeffrey with a J is what English did once it stopped consulting them, and both spellings have been said exactly the same way for six hundred years.

Peace, joined to something nobody has settled

The second half is clear: frid, peace. The first half is not, and medieval scribes were already confusing the candidates — a word for territory, a word for a stranger, a word for a pledge. Two or three separate Germanic names fell together into one medieval spelling, and no amount of work has separated them since.

Jeffrie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1961, with 45 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Jeffrie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is ancient, established and carried without difficulty anywhere in the West.
  • Jeff is one of the most unpretentious short forms in English and works at any age.
  • It has real forms in French, German, Italian and Spanish.
What to consider
  • Three endings are in circulation — ie, ey and y — and his will be written wrong more often than right.
  • The -ie ending is read as a woman's spelling by most Americans now, and this spelling is in fact recorded for both.
  • The meaning of the first half is genuinely unknown, so any confident gloss he is given is invented.
