Poets' Corner grew around a grave that was not there for poetry. Geoffrey Chaucer was buried in Westminster Abbey because he had been Clerk of the King's Works and held a tenancy nearby, and it was a century and a half before anybody moved him to a better tomb and started burying writers next to him.

The story of Jeffory

The corner is an accident that became an institution. Chaucer died in fourteen hundred and was given an ordinary burial in the transept; in the fifteen-fifties an admirer had a proper tomb built and his remains moved to it, and after that being buried near Chaucer became the thing to do. Spenser went in beside him and reportedly had poems and pens thrown into the grave by other writers. Then Dryden, Johnson, Tennyson, Browning, Hardy. A great many of the memorials commemorate people buried elsewhere, and several of the best English writers are not there at all. It began as a bureaucrat's grave in a convenient spot.

Peace, plus something unsettled

The second element is the Germanic word for peace, and it is secure. The first is not: at least two and probably three separate names fell together in medieval French, and the candidates for the first half include words for territory, for a traveler and for a pledge. The unstressed vowel in this spelling is written with an o, which is the fourth option English has used.

Fashion outlook

Jeffory sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spoken name is completely established and never needs repeating.
  • Jeff is short, plain and universally understood from childhood onward.
  • The name is recognizable in French and Italian with small changes.
What to consider
  • Three spellings circulate and this is the rarest of them.
  • The middle vowel is silent, so the spelling cannot be defended in speech.
  • It is strongly dated to the middle of the last century in American records.
