Jeannetta
Feminine · “God is gracious”
Jeannetta stacks a French diminutive and an Italian one on the same name, which no European language would do. It is also, as it happens, the name of a ship whose destruction proved something nobody had believed: that the ice at the top of the world moves, in a steady current, from one side of the pole to the other.

The story of Jeannetta
The Jeannette sailed north in eighteen seventy-nine on a theory that a warm current would carry her over the pole. It was wrong. She was locked in the ice for two years, drifted with it, and was crushed north of Siberia; most of the crew died walking out. Three years later, wreckage from the ship was found frozen into an ice floe off the coast of Greenland, on the other side of the Arctic Ocean, which meant the ice itself had carried it across. A Norwegian read the report, concluded that a ship built to survive being frozen in could ride the same current deliberately, and did exactly that a decade later. A catastrophic expedition produced, by accident, the single most useful piece of Arctic science of its century.
Meaning
God is gracious
The base is the French feminine of John, and the Hebrew sentence behind it means that God has shown favor. The reading is settled and passes through both endings unchanged. The doubled n is French orthography and the -etta ending is Italian, so the name carries two national conventions that arrived in America separately and were combined here.
How the name formed
- A Hebrew sentence-name behind John
- Jeanne in French with a diminutive ending
- An Italian diminutive added on top in America
- Jeannetta in the registers around the turn of the century

Pronouncing Jeannetta
juh-NET-uh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The doubled n is silent as a doubling, and the doubled t does the English job of keeping the vowel before it short, which is not what Italian would do with it.
