Where it comes from

The story of Jeannene

A pair of jeans is named after two cities and neither of them is in America. The fabric now called denim was woven in Nîmes in southern France, and it was sold as serge de Nîmes — the cloth of Nîmes — which English speakers compressed into denim. Jean was a different and lighter cotton cloth associated with Genoa, whose name in French is Gênes, and English turned that into jean. The two words were used loosely and then swapped roles: the trousers are called jeans and the fabric is called denim, which is the reverse of what a careful sixteenth-century draper would have said. The rivets are the American part, patented in the eighteen-seventies to stop pockets tearing on working men's trousers, and they are why the garment exists in its modern form at all.

Meaning

the Lord is gracious

The French feminine of Jean, which is the French form of John, which is a Hebrew sentence joining a form of the divine name to a verb about showing favor. The doubled n and the added ending are both American additions and carry nothing.

Fashion outlook

Jeannene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • The meaning is a full sentence and is documented all the way back.
  • The sound is completely familiar and needs no teaching.
What to consider
  • Janine, Jeannine and Jenine are all commoner and will be written for it.
  • Both changes are inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • It reads as belonging firmly to one mid-century generation.
