Where it comes from

Our story of Jeanice

A name invented for a book has a strange career. It arrives complete, with no ancestors, and if the book is popular enough it enters the general stock within a decade and is then treated exactly like a name a thousand years old: shortened, respelled, compounded, given to grandchildren who have never heard of the novel. Within two generations nobody can tell it from an inherited name, and the only evidence that it was made is the flat absence of it in every record before the publication date. This one has been through the full sequence. It was coined, it spread, it was clipped and respelled, and this version puts the French spelling of Jean on the front of it, which adds a look of age to a name that has none.

Meaningnot established

Not established

There is no meaning to give. The name it respells was coined by a novelist, probably out of Jane and an ending that sounded right, and coined names do not acquire meanings by being used. The French spelling on the front is a visual borrowing and does not import the French name's sense, which in any case belongs to a man's name and not a woman's.

Pronouncing Jeanice

juh-NEESE

Two syllables with the stress at the back. Some families say JEE-niss with the weight at the front, which is closer to the name it was respelled from; the spelling supports both.

Jeanice sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1959, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Jeanice sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English, so it is never mispronounced twice.
  • Jean is a complete, established name sitting in the front half.
  • Final stress gives the name a clean finish that the standard spelling does not have.
What to consider
  • Janice, Janis and Jenice are all in use for closely related sounds and will be substituted.
  • The French spelling suggests a French origin that is not there.
  • There is no meaning available, because the name at the bottom of it was made rather than inherited.
