Jeanett drops the final letter from a French diminutive, which is the kind of small American economy that turns up all over the record. The name has two very good namesakes: the first woman elected to the American Congress, and a ship that was crushed by Arctic ice and then, in pieces, proved something nobody believed.

Where it comes from

The story of Jeanett

Jeannette Rankin was elected from Montana in 1916, four years before American women could vote nationally, and on her fourth day in the House she voted against entering the First World War. She was not re-elected. Twenty-four years later she came back, and on the day after Pearl Harbor she was the only member of either chamber to vote against declaring war on Japan — a vote so unpopular she had to shelter in a phone booth from the crowd afterwards. She never regretted either one, and she was still leading marches against a different war in her late eighties.

Meaning

little Jeanne

The base is the French feminine of John, and the ending is the French diminutive that English has borrowed on hundreds of words. In French the final e is required and silent; in American English it is silent and therefore, to a certain kind of practical speller, optional. Dropping it changes nothing that can be heard, which is why the record carries this form alongside the full one for a whole generation.

How the name formed

  1. Hebrew Yohanan, and its French feminine Jeanne
  2. the French diminutive ending produces Jeannette
  3. an Arctic ship of that name is crushed by ice in 1881
  4. a Montana congresswoman makes it famous in 1916
  5. Jeanett appears in American records without its final letter

Jeanett sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1959, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jeanett sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jean and Nettie are both waiting inside it and belong to different centuries.
  • The sound is entirely familiar and needs no explanation in English or French.
  • It has two namesakes of real substance and neither of them dominates the name.
What to consider
  • The final letter will be restored by nearly everyone who writes it, and by every autocorrect.
  • Janet, Jeanette and Jeannette are all commoner and will be substituted in speech.
  • It is firmly a name of the first half of the last century.
