French writes the name with an ea that says something quite unlike what those letters do in English — and an English reader, applying English rules, arrives at the correct pronunciation anyway, because ea happens to spell the same long vowel in a great many English words. That is luck rather than design. Most French spellings borrowed into English do not survive the crossing so cleanly: the eau of Beau, the oi of Toi, the gn of Champagne all have to be learned. This one is read right by accident, which is why it settled into American use so easily and why almost nobody notices it is French at all.
