The story of Jeanann
Jean was the Scottish form of Jane, and in the eighteenth century it was among the commonest names in Scotland. Jean Armour married Robert Burns and bore him nine children; in 1791, when Burns fathered a daughter by another woman, Jean took the baby in and raised her with her own, and she is remembered as saying that her Robbie should have had two wives. Ann came into English from Hannah by way of Greek and French. Twentieth-century American families joined the two into one word, and in doing so put the same Hebrew root for grace, once through John and once through Hannah, into a single name.
